Part 1 in the destruction/re-build of our car!!
(all images less than 100k)

Update so they are easier to find!! Right click, save target as..... for a video of the work so far!!

here14mb
Exactly the same but a little smaller - a 7mb file here

This is the same video clip as shown elswhere in this thread - just easier to find here!!

Quick re-cap for those who are unfamiliar with the story.
Last year Tessa and I got married. We had a great day – August 6th – and many of you were able to attend either the wedding itself or the hog roast we had in the evening. A fine display of about 30 Caterhams and other exotica in the garden was the perfect end to a perfect day.
In the afternoon Mark presented us with the most incredible gift from all our Caterham friends. Totally unknown to us, Mark had been contacting many of our friends and fellow Blatchatters and had made a collection. It was from this collection that we were given 3 gift vouchers. One was for a rebuild of the car at Arch, one was for a re-spray at TSK and one was funds left over, for spending on any bits we needed from Caterham.
We were totally shocked and stunned – it was the most incredible gesture and very humbling. As many of you know, our car is ‘well used’ and it has started to get very tatty, and more worrying, there is just about no powder coating left – she is rusting away!

We had decided to wait until after the winter, so that the freshly rebuilt car missed most of the salt and bad weather, so this week, after speaking to Bruce at Arch, we started the process. The cars last outing was a great fun day at Abingdon last friday with MSE, and the odometer had stopped at 91,676 miles when I drove to Marks place this morning.

We are going to deliver the chassis to Bruce totally stripped, ready to be blasted, re-powder coated and then totally re-panelled. We are rebuilding the car exactly as she is now (sans rust!) – so same colour (a Honda pearlescent blue) and yes; we are keeping the flared wings. I guess it just wouldn’t be our car if we changed her!!

So, today we arrived at Marks at about 11am to start the process. We don’t hang around, and by 5.30pm she looks remarkably stripped!! Obviously I’ll be putting all this onto the website when I can, but I have a year of updates to get through first, so I’ll do a write up here first – particularly as we have so many of you to thank….

Click on the links to see some pictures – all from today!

As you can see, I have not really bothered cleaning the car for the last few weeks!
here

Straight on in there….
here
removing windscreen, seats, carpets and engine bay stuff.
here
- found it was much easier to remove the tunnel top through the hole where the heater used to be!!
here

Engine and gearbox out in one go

here

The pile of bits was growing
here

With the engine removed, some of the rust problems are more visible!

Next job was the wings – doubt these have come off since the car was built, so extreme measures were required!!
here

here
….and the pile of bits grew….
here

The it was off with the front corners…
here
here
here

Then boot out, fuel tank out, and then on to the rear corners..
here
here
here

…and that’s where we called it a day!
here

all that was left to do was remove the bits from Marks garage, and take them away to our now empty garage!
here
and just hope no one steals the car over-night. Might be a pain to explain to the insurance company – ‘So, its actually 2 cars that got stolen….’!

Not bad for a days work – we have removed:

Seats, carpets, tunnel top, boot cover, boot carpet, boot floor
Windscreen and wipers
Fuel tank
Rear wheel hubs, discs, brakes and half shafts
FIA roll bar
Rear suspension
Heater
Rad and associated pipes
Exhaust
Engine & gearbox
Loom
Front wings
Headlights & supports
Front brakes, suspension and wishbones

…..so, tomorrow its off to Goodwood Breakfast Club, back to watch the (recorded) Oz GP then back out to the garage to finish the job. We have to remove the de dion tube, dashboard, scuttle, rear wings and then take all the panels off!

Goodnight!!

Glad to here your keeping the Superior wings and not joining the 'dark side'!
Mind you, as you use the car then they're much more practical anyway.

Can't seem to get any of the pics beyond this section:-

Angus,

Just have a think about possible chassis mods you may want done before it is repowder coated and reskinned.
I now regret not spending slightly more and making one or two modifications to it.

Also remember to ask Bruce (emphasise) if you want holes cut to expose petty strut bush, front exhaust mount, rear seating bolt holes in floor (non S-type seat frame holes I use for crotch belts), spare wheel bolt hole.
I was very pleased with Arch's work but they did forget to do these and I only picked up on the spare wheel bolt hole (which Neil knocked out in a brace of shakes) before I'd left Arch and got the car painted.

Powdercoated engine bay is a treat too thumbs upthumbs up

Chuck in all the wishbones, ARBs etc too toothy smileytoothy smiley

What bits are you going to replace ? I would certainly consider the de-dion tube or at least get it checked.

Be very careful with the wiring. Label absolutely everything thumbs up

Looks a great project smiley

Bit of a delay this afternoon - we all went to Goodwood Breakfast Club, and now Tessa, Kate and Mark are watching the GP.
Nifty - yep, got a list of things to check! Going to pop some watts linkage mounts on, check for all the cage bushes etc etc. I hope to visit the chassis a few times whilst it is being done, so should be easy enough to check on things. Anything black and powder coated will be redonethumbs up
Rob - many thanks, appreciate the offer and will get in touch if required!!thumbs up
I think I am going to replace the wiring loom - ours is pretty scrappy, and I fear wires cracking - ones that have not been moved for 10 years. Good chance to tidy it up and mount it neatly.
Just got to take the diff and prop out, scuttle and dashboard, then tear the ali panels off. Then its up to Arch sometime this week. While the car is up there, we'll clean of all the other bits, tidy things up etc. Not sure how long it will all take - I guess the delay may come while waiting for painting....
Rebuild of car itself should be reasonably quick, assuming funds allow me to get all the bits I need.....
