Thinking of buying one of these 1940's inspired pilot watches
I believe the 'original' watches during the 40's where built by IWC, Laco, A.Lange, Stowa, and Wempe.
Of course there nowadays are a lot of others who have similar models, for example Glashütte Orginal, Steinhart, Archimede, Aristo, Azimuth, ... etc ...
My preference is for a 47 or 55mm model ... as close to the original as possible. Budget is around 500 euro ... so that rules out the likes of IWC
Any advice ? Anybody on here with such a watch ?
TIA

While I like IWC in general, and the Pilot's Watch Chronograph (IW371701) in particular, for now I want to buy a watch that is as close as possible to the original 1940's watches.
This of course means sticking to the 5 manufacturers that made them back then ... but more importantly also to the original design (so no chrono).
For now, I have a preference for the Stowa Flieger Automatik without Logo ... although IMHO a real Flieger needs to be a bit larger (then the 40mm of the Stowa) and needs to be manual wind instead of automatic movement.
But then at 630 euro ... I think you'll struggle to find better (value/money wise).
Another one that I really like is the Laco Replika Automatic 55 (Ref. 861334) ... not cheap at Euro 2.498 ... but still a lot cheaper then IWC's Big Pilot
Apart from that, Steinhart also offers some nice and affordable models ... maybe the more rational choice (although not one of the 5 original manufacturers) ...
Choices, choices, choices

No problem ...
The Stowa Flieger Automatik without Logo : here
The Laco Replika Automatic 55 : here
The Steinhart "Nav B-Uhr VINTAGE Automatik" : here
Enjoy
BTW, I also like this one here ... not exactly the same as the previous watches, but a 47mm and a Unitas 6497 Swiss manual wind-up movement ... for 'only' 350 euro

This has got me reminiscing over my Dad's Rolex Oyster he had in the war which he used to navigate by in his Catalina. He gave it to me but sadly some scrote burgled my house and it is now long gone
There is motor racing and then there is F1

Cheers Roy, but I'm not that much of an expert (yet ) to go vintage ...
For now I'll stick to the modern versions of these nice watches (thanks for another link RobW ) ... but maybe one day, who knows
Btw, how's the aero & bullet cam ???

I have a Fortis Flieger which comes in at about the cost you are looking at. ETA movement is fairly bomb-proof.

47mm Unitas 6497 (handwinding) Sandwich dial Limidted edition of 333 pieces
IMHO the best value/money you'll find at the moment (regarding B-Uhrs)

Nice ... but they're quartz And that's not exactly an option for a 'flieger' IMHO. Thanks anyway

You might want to look at these:
Oris Flight Watches
I have one of these as well as several Breitling Pilots Watches.
The Oris watches are in my opinion some of the best mechanical movements that are still value for money, I have 4 different versions from flight timers to more formal dress watches.
You do get what you pay for though, so buy wisely!!
