Hi all,

I'm having a few problems with my Dell Inspiron 1011 netbook, is there any technical gurus that can help!

Problem is using it last night i was getting a message that 'virtual memory is low' when i looked at the hard drive status it is only using 8gb of the 160gb hard drive and followed the advice of the Dell website to extend the particion which didnt seem to work, now ive switched the computer on again and it wont start up...getting the error message-

MBR Error 1 press any key to boot from floppy
then MBR Error 2 press any key to boot from floppy

problem is the computer has no disk drive and i foolishly didnt back up a copy of my accounts last night, lesson learnt.. is there anyway i can rectify this problem?

thanks in advance...

MBR stands for Master Boot Record, this is the part of your hard drive that tells the PC about what and where the Operating System is (a bit like and index). You say that you extended the partition (this is what has caused the problem) the index now does not point to the correct pages of a book.

I would say that the first thing to do, would be to remove the hard drive and add it as a second drive in a PC and see if you can access the data.

I hate to say this, but I fear that you may have lost all of your data. You should never play about with partition sizes if .

1, You are not 100% sure, of what you are doing.
2, Make a backup first.

Sorry sad smiley

Mike, you've probably not lost any of your data, but it does depend exactly what you did.

If it's Vista or Windows 7 put the original Vista/7 CD in, boot from that and select recovery. It'll repair the MBR if it needs it.
