You have to realise that to most Americans everyone who enters the states is a potential terrorist, this is caused because thats how Congress spoon feds them to justify massive spending on defence.
Also congress blamed the TSA for 9/11 so they now treat everyone arriving in states as a terrorist.
They are also very selective on race, and passport carried. Yet we still think of them as greatest thing since sliced bread. Certainly Cameron bows and scrapes to them all the time. I go to states most yrs but at least I clear immigration before leaving these shores so arrive in states as domestic flight. I refuse nowadays to stand in long queues in TSA hall being treated like dirt, and made feel how lucky i am they are letting me into their beloved country.angry smiley

up arrow tell me about it. In 1992 I went to the US to learn to fly (American PPL), had a B1 multiple entry visa and got deported for not having the right visa. Apparently they defined me as a 'student' and I needed a 'student' visa. This was long before Al Q of course; I had return air tickets, $5000 to spend in their country, a letter from my new employer stating my start date, and a letter of confirmation from the flight school. I was escorted back onto the same plane I came out on and landed at LGW 23 hrs after having left and was mightily choked off to say the least.

I have absolutely no intention of ever going back and will spend my time and money elsewhere thank you. No disrespect to the many US friends that I have, the music I love and the good hearted souls within the country, just after the way I was treated it kinda determines your outlook on things.

My last business trip to Washington a few years ago started with a pleasant enough encounter with US Immigration.

Immigration Official (female): Sullenly and head down Is your trip business or pleasure?
Me: Business.
IO: Head still down and sullenWhat type of business?
Me: Meetings with the US Marshals and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
IO: Head up and the glimmer of a smile Oh, heavy business. Enjoy your stay, Sir.

last year, friend of mine (lovely bloke, very intelligent but doesn't think before speaking) went to New York. Upon arrival:

Immigration bloke (surly etc): Purpose of visit?angry smiley
British chap: Oh terrorism, chemical warfare etc (actually is a chemical, biological and radiological weapons nerd working with governments)
IB: Um, you might need to just stand still for a minute...
BC: Oh s***t, I meant I am here to advise Director Homeland Security in New York!blushing smiley<oops>

A few phone calls and 45 minutes later, welcomed into the country but not an experience he EVER wants to replicate...

I had some fun going through the normal scanner (metal detector) on an internal US flight. I had my hands in my pockets. Apparently that would stop the scanner from detecting metal in my pockets!!! I started to ask questions and point out how useless the scanner would be if it was fooled by hands in pocketses.

Of course I regretted it as soon as it got painful. I made the flight, but only just. I often go through with hands in pockets and get sent back through again for the fun of it! Pehaps I could film it and make it an internet meme!

Hehe

Which bit of this dont they get?

Quote:
Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State Requests and requires in the Name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance, and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.

They read that as "hold him down... we are out of lube..."
